Title:Tool Qualification by Validation

Abstract:

This tutorial presents the tool qualification requirements from safety norms, in particular from ISO 26262, and shows how these can be refined having a tool chain evaluation report. Tool validation is a qualification method that can be used up to ASIL D. The main goal for tool validation is to show by systematic testing that the potential errors without high detection probability within the development project do not occur in the tool as used in the project. We illustrate different test design methods for tools by the means of examples. These test design methods, if combined in the right way, can provide evidence for the absence of the identified potential tool errors. Furthermore we present a tool chain analysis model that can be used to model tool chains together with test cases and validation suites. The model brings along many advantages like test selection according to a project's needs, consistency checking, generation of test plans, identification of missing test cases, and document templates. The model has been developed and used within industrial projects on tool evaluation, tool qualification and the planning of tool qualification kits.
